Browse place-names Element Glossary Advanced search API

Introduction

This resource includes all Berwickshire place-names on the OS 1:50,000 Landranger map, and can be searched in various ways.

Quick Search retrieves place-names containing any string of letters in the modern spelling of the name or in any element(s) from which it may derive. An asterisk wildcard is used to find place-names/elements beginning with the string (e.g. hall*), ending with the string (e.g. *hall) or with the string in the middle (e.g. *hall*). Double quotation marks are used to find an exact search (e.g. "hall"). Special characters, such as Old English æ and þ, can be pasted into the search box.

Browse Place-Names retrieves place-names ordered alphabetically by current or historical spelling, chronologically by date of earliest record, or by source, parish or type of feature.

The Element Glossary retrieves elements alphabetically or by language, with links to the place-name(s) in which they appear.

The Advanced Search allows you to specify a range of search parameters, using the same wildcards as for the Quick Search.

Results can be displayed as text or in map format. A range of map options is available by clicking on the menu icon on the map page. The map legend identifies icons representing type of place, date, altitude or language. Clicking “unselected” in the map legend will show the other place-names in the resource as grey dots.

Some identifications are less secure than others. The Certainty level ranges from 1 (Certain) to 3 (Uncertain).

For direct access to the data you may use the project's API.
